The Central Contact Point for Asylum Candidates (ZASt) in Halberstadt is a collection of containers, huts and high-rise blocks far outside the city. You can only reach them via a long cobblestone road.
The ZASt is fenced with high fences and desolate, empty parking spaces. Security takes down Cedric’s pass and he gets a yellow bracelet with a number. Then I escend him to an emergency container with two smoking men and 2 double-decker beds.
The visit to ZASt in Halberstadt actually shocked me. A desolate camp somewhere in the nowhere – where we keep people and condemn them to inaction. Children play with nothing in the dreary mud. I say goodbye to Cedric and encourage him to take his business forward. But there is also a stone in my stomach on the way back.
